A three-part series to top winter escapes.
Our Final Stop: Los Cabos, Mexico
Why not continue your 2019 celebration with a January escape? Whether in search of the laid-back vibe of San José del Cabo, or Cabo San Lucas’ glitziest resorts and restaurants, this cheat sheet marries luxury resorts, culturally-inspired day trips, and sea-me adventure.
LOS CABOS, MEXICO
STAY: Esperanza, an Auberge Resort & Spa. This famous Los Cabos resort has experienced a stylish second chapter after Hurricane Odile. Stay at one of the 900-square-foot casitas and you’ll be hard pressed to leave the resort. What’s more, its seaside Cocina del Mar restaurant is one of the most coveted dinner reservations in Los Cabos. Esperanza also features more than 100 varietals of Mexico’s most nuanced tequilas. Alternatively, if wanting to venture off the beaten path, stay at Hotel San Cristobal Baja. Recently opened by powerhouse hotelier Liz Lambert, this new resort is decidedly off the grid. Located in the laid back town of Todos Santos near Cabo San Lucas (an hour drive, yet well worth it), its cocktail menu features small-batch mezcals and tequilas. Afterward, watch surfers ride the swell at Cerritos.
EAT: Flora Farms. Ask anyone about where to dine in Los Cabos, and this typically tops the list. Flora’s Field Kitchen is all about handcrafted food made from farm-fresh ingredients. A gorgeous, 25-acre working farm in San José del Cabo, this restaurant is reason enough to book the next charter out. Executive Chef Guillermo Tellez serves meat from the nearby 150-acre ranch, while the wood-fired oven churns out 15 types of Neapolitan-style pizza. Before sitting down to dinner, order the outpost’s innovative take on the margarita—the Farmarita. And though Flora Farms is well-known for its cuisine, lesser known (yet equally as notable) is the recently debuted Farm Spa. The spa menu features plant-based therapies and treatments, like the “garden massage,” which employs orange and spruce oils.
SPORT: You can’t fully appreciate the Los Cabos coastline until you’ve seen it from the water or beneath the sea. Take in the famous views from a French-designed sailing yacht with Cabo Adventures. A personalized itinerary is complemented by lavish accommodations and impeccable service on this half-day outing. If you prefer to be under the Sea of Cortez versus sailing on it, scuba dive the scenic East Cape. One of only three living coral reefs in North America, Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park is home to 800 species of marine life, including whales, sharks, sea turtles, and manta rays. Or, discover Los Cabos’ wilder side in Los Barriles, located 40 miles north of San José del Cabo off of Highway 1. During winter, Los Barriles turns into a windsurfing and kiteboarding hot spot. And if surf lessons are calling, the Cabo Surf Hotel is a legendary surf school for all level riders.
SEE: Once you’ve had your fill of sun and sea, venture away from the resort-lined coast along Highway 1. Head north into the mountains and find rustic villages with true authentic charm. The sleepy pueblo of Miraflores is just 45 miles north of San José del Cabo airport and is home to artisans, ranchers, cowboys, and plenty of local charm. Drive another 90-minutes north and you’ll discover El Triunfo, a colonial-era mining town that’s now a cultural hub. Stroll through old mining grounds to witness the mining ruins and former smokestacks and then stop at the mining museum. A handful of locally inspired restaurants also make this road trip worth the effort, including a Sunday paella brunch at Bar El Minero and wood-fired pizzas at El Triunfo Café.
