Where To Go Now
September 27, 2018

A three-part series to top fall getaways.
First up, Louisville, Kentucky.

The whimsical nature of travel is often the most fun. Schedule a last-minute trip and say hello to weekend mode. With these cliff notes to Louisville, culture, art, and the Breeders’ Cup World Championships await.

STAY: 21c Museum Hotel. Founded by contemporary art collectors Laura Lee Brown and Steve Wilson, this multi-venue art museum and 91-room boutique hotel hugs historic West Main Street and is a hub for creatives and execs. If visiting during one of Louisville’s music festivals, like Bourbon & Beyond, expect to find rock stars (David Byrne and Robert Plant were recently spotted) sipping small-batch Kentucky bourbon with local entrepreneurs at its Proof on Main bar. What’s more, five historic 19th-century warehouses host exhibition spaces, where curated shows and site-specific installations celebrate contemporary culture. Want to sleep with art? You can do this, too. New York-based artists Jonah Freeman and Justin Lowe created a sculptural installation that doubles as an eccentric hotel room. Called Asleep in the Cyclone, the room is inspired by the artists’ large-scale architectural pieces and is an homage to the 1960s counter-cultural artists’ community, Drop City. If wanting the top-notch suite, book the 1346-square-foot rooftop apartment with a garden terrace that overlooks the Ohio River.

EAT: Jack Fry’s. Founded in 1933 by raconteur Jack Fry and his gregarious wife, Flossie, this Louisville mainstay is an institution that lures a see-and-be-seen crowd. Vintage black-and-white photos line the walls, showcasing Fry’s penchant for sports and gambling. Live jazz is staged most every night, and the steaks, shrimp and grits, and martinis here are the best in town.

SPORT: Many of our Cardholders join us for an incredible V-VIP weekend during the Kentucky Derby, yet there’s reason to visit Churchill Downs all year round. If traveling with the family this fall, locals will tell you not to miss Sunday brunches held at the track, with racing throughout the day. Additionally, Trick or Treating at the Track (October 28th) stages more than 20 kids events for ages 12 and under. And come November 2nd, Sentient cardholders visit the famous track for the action-packed Breeders’ Cup World Championships.

SEE: Muhammad Ali Center. Part museum, part foundation, and centered around “inspiring greatness,” this temple to the indelible boxer will engage both sports and non-sports fans. The center celebrates Ali’s six core principles (confidence, conviction, dedication, giving, respect, and spirituality) with interactive exhibitions and galleries.

GOLF: Valhalla Golf Club. Located 20 miles east of Louisville and consistently ranked the number-one golf course in Kentucky, this private club opened its doors in 1986. The par-72, Jack Nicklaus-designed course graces 486 acres of undulating Kentucky terrain and measures 7,195 yards from the gold tees. The first nine showcase a Scottish-links inspired layout, with bookends of Kentucky bluegrass that keep the big hitters on their toes.
