Spring Road Trips: Where To Go Now
May 17, 2019

A three-part series celebrating our favorite U.S. road trips. First departure city: Austin, Texas.

Spring has sprung! And that means it’s time to put rubber to the road and get outta dodge. If you’re jet-setting to Austin this spring or summer, here’s our local inside track on two unforgettable day trips from downtown. And just what to drive? The Maserati GranTurismo Convertible is sure to put a pep in your step.

Marfa 21

Drive Time: 429 miles from Austin—a 6(ish)-hour-long drive with plenty of intriguing stops along the way.
STAY: Hotel Saint George has noteworthy, design-forward rooms and hang spaces, but its independent book store is what truly sets this property apart. Browse top tomes on art, cuisine, and architecture and then dine on New American fare at LaVenture restaurant.
EAT: A favorite among wayfaring foodies, Cochineal is located in the heart of Marfa and dishes South Texas Antelope Carpaccio tapas and a decadent Mesquite Grilled Filet Mignon. Chef/Owner Alex Gates is a Texas standout and a regular at the Austin Food & Wine Festival.
NOT TO MISS: You can’t visit Marfa without experiencing the famous Prada Marfa “museum.” The permanent art installation by Elmgreen and Dragset is located 25 miles northwest of the city. If more art beckons, the Wrong Store is a quirky little boutique tucked away in a former church. And make sure to sip a margarita at Hotel Paisano, the film location of the 1955 classic “Giant” featuring Rock Hudson, James Dean, and Elizabeth Taylor.

Lake travis 1

Drive Time: 19 miles from downtown Austin—a short jaunt with weekend-long rewards.
STAY: Miraval Austin Resort & Spa opened in the beginning of 2019 to rave reviews. Located in the heart of Texas Hill Country, the property overlooks Lake Travis and is hugged by Balcones Canyonlands Preserve. Tranquil suites reflect natural earth tones while patios overlook the movie-set landscape. Take a deep dive into wellness with meditation, fitness, outdoor adventure, hiking, yoga, equine, farm activities, culinary, and spa experiences.
EAT: A road trip to Miraval merits a several night stay, and the resort’s “conscious cooking,” inspired by the brand’s flagship in Tucson, is as notable as the wellness treatments. Expect rotating, seasonal menus, cooking demonstrations, and immersive workshops to tease the taste buds. Join the resident bee keepers at The Cypress Creek Farm for honey tastings and seminars.
NOT TO MISS: Miraval’s Equine Therapy has enticed visitors far and wide to its resort grounds. At the Austin property, guests can experience various equine programs at the aforementioned Cypress Creek Farm, while additional, Texas-inspired offerings include Texas Two-Step, Yoga with a Twang, Hatchet Throwing, and Archery. And the spa treatments? Let’s just say three days will fly by. Standouts include Body Renewal Rituals and the Austin Apothecary Massage.
Stay tuned for our next top spring road trip. Get ready for scenic east coast highways and chic style.
