Long Weekend: Atlanta - Sentient Jet

January 25, 2019

The Big Game is just weeks away. As such, the countdown is on to the winning touchdown. If traveling to Atlanta for sports and soireés, here’s a curated hit list of where to play and stay.

STAY: Celebrate the best of the south at the newly rebranded Waldorf Astoria Atlanta Buckhead, a 42-story stunner of a façade that replaced the former Mandarin Oriental. Located on Peachtree Road, expect plenty of action outside its front doors, yet a peaceful scene once inside. Designed by American architect Robert A.M. Stern, the building now includes 42 private residences and lavish suites. Don’t miss the private gardens and two-story spa. Try the Peach Indulgence body treatment, an exfoliating massage that draws from Georgia’s famous fruit.

EAT: Make time to venture past Buckhead and hit the East Village. Atlanta’s funky neighborhood located south of downtown (and close to the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium) is well worth an Uber ride. Banshee dishes Wagyu beef and farm-to-table fare in a decidedly low-key, hip space. And when in the south, it’s bourbon, baby. Banshee is also known for its hopping bar scene; kickstart your eve with the Staccato, infused with bourbon, meletti, tawny port, fernet branca, lemon, and nutmeg. The ETA (local slang for East Village Atlanta) is also lined with Atlanta’s most touted live music venues. Post-dinner, stake your claim at The Earl and you just may discover one of Atlanta’s hottest indie rock bands.

SIP: Atlanta is home to several worthy speakeasies, so before tucking in at the Waldorf, ask where to find an unmarked black door with a pig on it. Once inside The Blind Pig Parlour Bar, discover a throwback to the 1920s. With oversized rugs, dark woods, and plenty of handmade drinks, the bar’s Prohibition-era concoctions take center stage. Order the Last Word—a gin and chartreuse cocktail to cap a stellar Atlanta day.

SPORT: The Big Game is the main act, of course. And through Sentient Jet, exclusive access awaits. What’s more, the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium features posh suites, the perfect perch to watch Maroon 5 headline the halftime show while an in-suite personal attendant caters to every whim. The new stadium design is as buzzworthy as the teams it will host; its signature roof, designed like a camera lens, retracts in just ten minutes, while state-of-the-art technology anchors the build.

SEE: A visit to the High Museum of Art is a must pre or post game day. Among several noteworthy exhibitions, the current “Look Again: 45 Years of Collecting Photography” (on display through April 14), draws from both the High’s archives and private collections. The High Museum began collecting photographs in the early 1970s, and the collection now includes more than 7,000 international photographs by diverse practitioners, including artists, entrepreneurs, journalists and scientists.
