The first Saturday in May marks the annual Kentucky Derby, a horse race synonymous with Southern refinement, pastel outfits and mint juleps. The top ranked, Grade I stakes race has a steep winning purse of $2 million. Twenty horses compete in the race, with eight horses racing at one time around the famous Churchill Downs racetrack. Often dubbed “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports,” the prestigious race gets its nickname from the approximate amount of time it takes the winner to reach the finish line.
