Caribbean 2.0
February 1, 2019

This week’s polar vortex left us dreaming of sun and sand. Pack a beach bag and sense of adventure—in the aftermath of devastating hurricanes, the Caribbean is in the midst of an inspired rebirth. Let’s island hop:

Sailing is all but mandatory here, and the BVI’s are having a major comeback. Though some resorts remain in the midst of a rebuild, several have reopened and marinas are robust with super yachts.
Stay: Oil Nut Bay. What to expect at this 30-acre resort on Virgin Gorda? Pampering and play. The villas are among the BVI’s most high end, and the resort further tempts with private infinity-edge pools and sweeping ocean views from every room. Book the Cliff Penthouse Suite, which frames one of the best views on the island.
See: No trip to the BVIs is complete without a morning jaunt to The Baths. The iconic rock formations hug caves and aquamarine natural pools. Afterward, head to Cooper Island for lunch at the Cooper Island Beach Club.
Sip: Cap the day with a famous rum-infused Painkiller cocktail at the Soggy Dollar Bar on Jose Van Dyke island. The smallest of the four BVIs, Jose Van Dyke calls for lazy, sun-kissed afternoons spent discovering intimate little coves.

Anguila Beaches

Decidedly not as glitzy as St. Barts, Anguilla was hit hard by the hurricanes, yet also one of the first to rebuild and re-imagine. Go now, and you’ll be one of the first to experience some of the most anticipated resort openings in the Caribbean.
Stay: Belmond’s Cap Juluca Anguilla just reopened after a meticulous $121 million renovation. Sophisticated suites feature private ocean room terraces (the crème de la crème are the Private Pool Villas), and the new spa is equally of note. The dining, however, is what may keep you coming back and includes CIP’s by Cipriani, Belmond’s legacy Italian restaurant; Maundays Lounge, a tapas bar inspired by Belmond’s Peruvian portfolio; and The Cap Shack, a beachfront seafood BBQ restaurant.
See: Anguilla prides itself on being quiet and low key, with white-sand beaches that beg for downtime. Our favorite is Shoal Bay, home to one of the best snorkeling spots on the island. The hurricanes reportedly caused extra sand to be compiled at the bay’s east end, making this two-mile stretch of sugary fine sand prettier than ever.
Sip: Celebrate island style at the Sunset Lounge at Four Seasons Anguilla, located on Barnes Bay. Order a mojito, Cuban cigar, and listen to DJs mix European-reggae beats.

Carribbean Island Top View

Rebounded and ready for action, St. Barts is the epitome of island chic. Whether after a low-key, sun-kissed escape or a club- and boutique-hopping girls getaway, it’s a guaranteed hot spot to beat the winter blues.
Stay: The anticipated opening of Le Barthélemy Hotel & Spa doesn’t disappoint. With new luxury oceanfront villas and an emphasis on wellness, discover chic Parisian cool married with Caribbean serenity. Interiors are by star designer Sybille de Margerie and cuisine is helmed by Michelin-starred French chef Guy Martin. What’s more, the spa fittingly features La Prairie facials, inspired by French beauty and taste.
See: Charter a private yacht to Colombier Beach. Nicknamed Rockefeller’s Beach (David Rockefeller owns surrounding property), this hideaway feels castaway-ish, with plenty of hiking, snorkeling, and sun bathing.
Sip: Cocktail culture on St. Barts has been defined by Nikki Beach Saint Barth. Hugging Saint-Jean Beach, find a tony crowd, guest DJs, artisan cocktails, and its trademark beachfront teepees.
