We’re proud to be the official private aviation provider of the Kentucky Derby®, and with the 145th running less than a month away (Saturday, May 4th), the annual horse racing countdown is on in Louisville, Kentucky. In addition to crowning the finest thoroughbred, the city will be celebrating its history of fine bourbons (lauded year-round in this charming southern city). Here’s our Top 5, tried-and-trending southern sips. Cheers!
Woodford Reserve Kentucky Derby 145. As the official bourbon of the Kentucky Derby®, Woodford Reserve produces an annual commemorative spirit just for the Derby, and this year’s colorfully inspired label was made by Kentucky artist Keith Anderson. The exclusive Kentucky Straight Bourbon honors the 145th run for the roses with a nose of mint, orange, and cocoa, while tasting notes celebrate toffee, caramel, chocolate, and spice. Craft your own Woodford Reserve classic mint julep as you sit back and enjoy the most exciting two minutes in sports®!
Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. Considered by many as the perfect one-stop-shop whiskey—ideal for on the rocks or in cocktails—this Kentucky treasure has notes of nutmeg and caramel. Located on the Kentucky River, Buffalo Trace Distillery has been making bourbon whiskey for more than 200 years.
Four Roses Single Barrel. Also a Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, this 100-proof spirit is aged eight years and best sipped neat. Complex, full-bodied and smooth, tasting notes include dried spice on the nose, with hints of ripe plum, cherries, and cinnamon.
New Riff. Adequately named, New Riff Distilling is a newcomer to the Kentucky Bourbon scene, which is steeped in tradition and history. Yet this brand is one to watch, as its Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey has quickly found a following and is made with a non-GMO mash comprised of corn, 30-percent rye, and a touch of malted barley. Expect butterscotch on the nose, with notes of sweet vanilla and rye spices.
Buffalo Trace William Larue Weller. Serve this hard-to-find $800 bottle at your Derby gathering, and it may be as talked about as the winning thoroughbred. The gem of Buffalo Trace’s Antique Collection, bourbon critics continually hail it as the best wheated bourbon on the globe. Expect to be walloped by vanilla and caramel on the nose, while your taste buds will dance to salted almond, marshmallow, and fig.
